By Brian J. Mueller

…is what you are.

I want to write
with a leaping lyricalness,
an always fresh perspective,
without anything being pinched
and the flow held back
by too much elastic.

I hear songs
being sung everywhere,
at all times,
and in impossible voices
which I could never –
ever imagined hearing,
even if like the mountains
I had a million years
to sit and wait.

The notes are in the particulars:
the who, what, where, when,
and especially the why.

The heart says,
Why do I make music?
And the soul spirit says,
Because you are
an instrument of love.

I regard myself as a beautiful musical instrument,
and my role is to contribute that instrument
to scripts worthy of it.
